Background :
Hedge fund D.E. Shaw has built a stake worth more than $1 billion in Sysco, two people familiar with the matter said Thursday, just hours after the food distribution giant announced plans to refresh its board and accelerate growth.
D.E. Shaw has held a position in Houston-based Sysco, now valued at $40 billion, for roughly ten years, though the scale of its current holding had not previously come to light. Sysco did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The company plans to appoint two new directors next month with backgrounds in technology, e-commerce and food service distribution, part of a wider push to use AI to sharpen operations and lift its share price. Analysts say AI can help distribution firms forecast demand, automate order processing and streamline logistics.
Sysco posted strong annual results this month, and its stock has continued to gain ground over the past year, even as the company navigates higher food and transport costs alongside more careful consumer spending.
Sysco said it expects $100 million in savings from AI, automation and process upgrades in fiscal 2027, crediting D.E. Shaw with helping speed up its adoption of AI tools. D.E. Shaw managing director Michael O’Mary said the firm looks forward to supporting Sysco’s transformation, including its acquisition of Restaurant Depot, and is also expected to help raise capital for the deal.
