Background-

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, reported record third-quarter revenue of T$1.49 trillion ($46.71 billion) on Thursday, topping market forecasts as demand for AI applications kept climbing.

Revenue for the July-September quarter rose 50% from T$989.92 billion a year earlier. An LSEG SmartEstimate from 19 analysts had expected T$1.46 trillion.

The number also beat the company’s own outlook. In July, TSMC guided for third-quarter revenue of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion, and the actual figure of $46.71 billion cleared the top of that range.

September sales alone reached T$511.86 billion, up 54.6% from the same month last year.

TSMC supplies major technology firms, including Nvidia and Apple. It is Asia’s most valuable listed company, with a market value of $2.1 trillion. The company kept its brief statement focused on revenue and held its outlook details for its full earnings report.

That report arrives next Thursday, when TSMC will share its plans for the current quarter and the rest of the year. Analysts expect third-quarter net profit to rise 64% from a year earlier to T$740.8 billion.

TSMC shares edged down 1.35% on Thursday ahead of the release, in a session when the broader market also eased 1%, though they remain up 64.52% so far this year, in step with the broader market.

The AI boom is also lifting other chip giants, as Samsung Electronics projected a record quarterly operating profit above 100 trillion won on strong memory sales.
