Key Facts-

  • ITOCHU buys stake in Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd. at Port Pipavav, Gujarat.
  • Terminal marks India’s first independent ammonia storage site, now fully operational.

Background-

ITOCHU Corporation, based in Tokyo, has bought a stake in Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd. from Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd. The move gives the Japanese trading house a share in the ammonia storage terminal that Aegis Terminal runs at Port Pipavav in Gujarat.

The terminal stands as India’s first independent ammonia storage site, and it is now up and running. It holds an ammonia storage tank built to handle roughly 36,000 metric tons, equal to about 52,000 cubic meters.

The site also comes with supporting infrastructure, covering cargo handling equipment, pipelines, and facilities for loading and unloading trucks at this key port on India’s western coast.

Ammonia demand keeps climbing as the world’s population grows, food and energy needs rise, and countries push toward cleaner energy sources. Fertilizer makers and industrial users have long relied on the chemical, but interest is now building around its use as a fuel and a carrier for hydrogen.

ITOCHU expects India’s demand to keep rising over time and wants to grow closer ties with fertilizer and chemical clients, all while eyeing openings in fuel and clean energy markets.

The company already runs a storage terminal operation with Aegis Group in India, focused mainly on LPG. It now plans to carry that experience into ammonia, building out logistics and setting up a dependable supply chain in a market that keeps expanding. ITOCHU will pair its worldwide ammonia trading network with the terminal know-how of Aegis and Vopak, part of a wider push to grow closer to end consumers.
